Origin of the First Dance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The tradition of the first dance originated in the courts and high society families of Europe<\/strong> in the late 18th century. It became customary for the hosts of an event to open the dancing<\/strong> with a first dance, officially starting the celebration.<\/p>\n

Over time, this tradition<\/strong> evolved into a wedding custom: the newlyweds’ first dance<\/strong>, which starts the party after all the formalities of the wedding.<\/p>\n

Traditionally<\/strong>, the first dance is a waltz<\/strong>, but nowadays, couples choose the style they prefer <\/strong>(a ballad, tango, merengue, bachata, urban or commercial styles), or even a mix of different genres<\/strong>. This trend is increasingly common, with couples often starting with a slow ballad<\/strong>, moving into something like a bachata, and ending with an upbeat<\/strong>, modern track to launch the party.<\/p>\n

Many couples take dance lessons<\/strong> or hire a professional choreographer<\/strong>. It\u2019s a great option if you want to impress your guests!<\/p>\n

When does it take place?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As mentioned earlier, the first dance usually happens after all the formal parts of the wedding<\/strong> (ceremony, banquet, speeches, cutting the cake, etc.), and typically after the bouquet<\/a> toss or handover.<\/strong><\/p>\n

While couples today can choose when to do their first dance, most still follow this traditional sequence. The first dance comes after dinner and right before the dance<\/strong> and open bar<\/strong> are officially opened.<\/p>\n

Some couples choose not to do a first dance<\/strong> at all or opt for a more unique way to start the party. We\u2019ll share more original ideas for this later in the article.<\/p>\n

Some couples, especially in Anglo-Saxon traditions, include a father-daughter or mother-son dance<\/strong> before or after their own first dance. If you like the idea, it\u2019s a lovely way to include your parents.<\/p>\n

How long should it be?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first dance typically lasts between 1 and 5 minutes<\/strong>. It\u2019s best not to go over 10 minutes<\/strong>, even if you\u2019re mixing several songs and styles. If you do create a mashup<\/em>, keep each segment short to keep it dynamic and engaging.<\/p>\n

There are countless songs to choose from for your first dance! To pick the perfect one(s), start by thinking about a song that holds special meaning for you<\/strong> as a couple.
